Poetry for Kids
This year as I homeschool my daughters for 1st grade I’m being more intentional about including poetry. We’ve always had poetry books and such, but this year I am also displaying a new nature related poem every week and we read it during our morning basket time. The girls really look forward to hearing it each day! We’ve also been really enjoying our weekly Poetry Teatime! I make gluten and dairy free treats, we sip tea, and we read poetry!
People often ask which books are currently in our poetry basket, so here you go!
- Where the Sidewalk Ends
- A Light in the Attic
- Sing a Song of Seasons: A Nature Poem for Each Day of the Year
- Around the Year
- The Random House Book of Poetry for Children
- Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost
- A Treasury of Mother Goose
- Beatrix Potter’s Nursery Rhyme Book
- Poetry for Young People: Emily Dickinson
A couple of our poetry books have a poem of the month or a poem of the day, so I begin with those and we go from there. This is a heavy, but absolutely gorgeous book!
Since my daughters are not fluent readers yet I do all the reading (unless we have a “guest speaker” like the week we invited grandma for tea!) So I will eat a few bites and then read a poem. Below you see this month’s poem from Around the Year.
My girls each have their favorite books and poems, so we basically take turns selecting which poem will be next. My 7 year old loves this Mother Goose book.
And my youngest asks for this popular Shel Silverstein book.
We typically start our teatime in the late morning and go through lunch. It’s a really nice time that we look forward to each week!
