25 Days of Christmas Books for Kids and Families
This year I decided to start a new holiday book tradition. We already read Christmas books during this season, but this year I thought it would be fun to make the daily books selection a surprise. For the 25 days leading up to Christmas we will unwrap a book for our morning time. I’ve considered doing this in the past, but it always seemed overwhelming (and expensive!) to buy and wrap 25 books. It finally occurred to me that I don’t actually need to BUY 25 new books. We already have a nice collection of Christmas books, as it’s been my tradition since my oldest was little to buy a new book for the kids to unwrap every Christmas Eve. So, I pulled out all of our Christmas books. To round out the collection bought a few new (and used) ones from my Christmas books wish list.
For our new Christmas book tradition, using mostly books we already own solved the first issue of the expense. The second issue was wrapping the books. I always delegate gift wrapping to my husband because it’s just not something I enjoy. He is kind enough to take it on (though I do help.) I don’t know why, but I really dislike wrapping gifts. I’ve seen some really pretty pinterest-worthy pictures of books wrapped in brown kraft paper, stenciled with decorations, and tied with twine. Lovely, but no. I’m not wrapping. For this project, I bought decorative fabric bags. And, as a bonus, we can use them when it comes time to wrap our gifts… inevitably left off until the day before Christmas anyway!
This year we are also beginning another new tradition of celebrating Advent with a devotional by Dean Lambert Smith, called The Advent Jesse Tree: Devotions for Children and Adults to Prepare for the Coming of the Christ Child at Christmas. I created a set of DIY ornaments to correspond with the Scripture and symbols in this book. You can find it here in my shop, if you’re interested!
